With so many midwives and maternity care assistants every day making such an enormous difference to families across the country, it’s going to be a tough choice for the judges of Scotland's Health Awards.

Our nation's midwives provide compassionate, personalised care around the clock, empowering women through the transformative journey of childbirth while ensuring the health and wellbeing of both mother and baby.

The Royal College of Midwives is the only professional and trade union dedicated to advocating for the midwifery profession and the whole midwifery team.

And that’s why they are supporting the Midwife Award in our upcoming Scotland's Health Awards, celebrating the individuals or teams giving excellent, evidence-based NHS maternity services and care.

“We know we could fill the hall with all the examples of how midwives and maternity care assistants every day make a difference to families across Scotland,” says Jaki Lambert, director of the Royal College of Midwives Scotland.

“However, it's great to get that opportunity to share that excellence with everyone else!”

‘Recognising compassionate care’

“We are delighted to again sponsor the Midwife Award as it recognises the high-quality and compassionate care that midwives and maternity care assistants provide for women and babies in Scotland,” she continues.

A great example of that care was last year’s winner Jane Howie who was nominated for the approach she brings as part of the Blossom team in Glasgow. This team brings valued continuity of care for women whose circumstances mean they are facing extra challenges as they navigate their pregnancy.

Jaki adds: “I was lucky enough to go and visit Jane after the awards in Glasgow with Justine Craig, Chief Midwifery Officer for Scotland, to celebrate her win and to have the opportunity to hear from women describing the difference her care had made to them.

“This is what midwives do. Through the Scotland’s Health Awards, we can raise awareness of the all the amazing work going on across Scotland by midwives, day in, day out, despite the challenges and pressures they face.

“It is your chance to say thank you.”
