Scotland retro: 38 photos taking you back to 1996, celebrating ordinary people, extraordinary lives

It was the year the Spice Girls crashed the charts, and Will Smith saved the planet in Independence Day.

These photos take you back to 1996, showing the sights you may remember around Scotland, and some of the ordinary people leading extraordinary lives.

They include the shopkeeper who chased a knife-wielding raider, lottery winners who scooped more than £2 million, and a dog owner whose pets starred in one of the year’s biggest films.

They also include everyday heroes, from GPs to dinnerladies, and bingo callers to firefighters.

Schoolchildren celebrating as their hard work pays off, the physio at a leading football club, and a Cliff Richard superfan who went to extraordinary lengths to prove her dedication.

This retro photo gallery shows, too, some of the lost shops you may remember from the 90s, like Mothercare, Radio Rentals, BHS and the much-missed Jenners department store.

And it illustrates how much life has changed in the last 30 years, with the old British Telecom phone booths seen in high demand during the days when few people had a mobile phone.

Do these photos bring back any memories for you, and what do you miss most about life in the 90s?
