Scotland is blessed with many fantastic fish and chip shops, and these nostalgic images celebrate some of the best of them over the years.
They show popular chippies around the country from the 60s, through the 70s, 80s, 90s and noughties, right up to the 2010s.
Some are still going strong but others have sadly closed over the years, with rising energy bills and the soaring cost of the raw ingredients making life increasingly hard.
Among the lost fish and chip shops pictured in this retro gallery is a Scottish institution, Brattisani’s, on Newington Road, Edinburgh, where countless diners enjoyed a chippy meal in the red booths after swimming at the Royal Commonwealth Pool.
Families, schoolchildren and a few famous faces are among those seen tucking into fish and chips at these popular takeaways and restaurants, some of which have been named the best in their region or even nationally.
Our gallery includes a fish and chips pizza, staff giving up their Christmas to feed homeless people, a chippy doubling up as a nightclub, and even one venue serving up crocodile and chips.
It also shows how prices have changed, with cod and chips costing just £1.30 at one popular chippy in the 80s.
Do these photos bring back any memories for you? What’s the best fish and chip shop you’ve ever eaten at, and what’s the best still going?
If you’re after more national nostalgia, you might enjoy this photo gallery taking you back to the early 70s.
