After director Matt Reeves said he wished they could have filmed in Glasgow more, The Batman Part II could shoot in the city next year.

Glasgow could soon stand in for Gotham City once again, when production on The Batman Part II begins next year.

Directed by Matt Reeves, the long-awaited sequel to 2022’s The Batman starring Robert Pattinson is currently in pre-production with fans speculating that the film will return to shoot in Scotland in early 2026.

It comes after The Batman Part II’s production designer Luke Hull shared photos from cities including Glasgow and Liverpool - both filming locations for the first film - which could have been taken while scouting locations for the upcoming project.

The Emmy Award-winning designer, whose previous work includes Sky and HBO series Chernobyl as well as Star Wars series Andor, posted pictures of what appears to be Anderston Railway Station and the exterior of Glasgow Cathedral.

The Casting Collective are also currently advertising for Glasgow-based extras to work on a “major feature film” shooting in the city next spring. While no details have been given about the project, this could possibly be connected to the upcoming DC film.

While there have been significant delays to the sequel, which was originally slated to be released this year, principal photography is expected to begin from January at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in London.

The Batman Part II is now scheduled to be released in cinemas on October 1, 2027.

Where did The Batman film in Glasgow?

Back in 2020, The Batman production took over areas in Glasgow including the Royal Infirmary, Necropolis, and Glasgow Cathedral, as well as Wishart Street, John Knox Street and Cathedral Square in the city.

The Necropolis was particularly prominent, as a fittingly gothic backdrop for the end of the film.

This doesn’t mean that the production will return to all of the exact same locations, however, The Batman director previously said locals should “get ready” for more filming in the city.

Paying tribute to Glasgow, Reeves shared that he wished more of The Batman could have been filmed there.

He said: “One of the things that was really important, I wanted this to feel like a Gothic American city, but one that you'd never been to. And so the way to do that was to choose beautiful Gothic architecture and so we went to Glasgow and honestly it was so beautiful, I wish we could've filmed there more.

“I really think it's a very special Gotham, I mean what a special place."

The city was also described as “beautiful” by Pattinson, who said: “It looks great as Gotham, who would've thought of all the cities in the world, Glasgow as Gotham?”

The Batman Part II would join a number of major film and TV productions to film in the city in recent years, including Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Edgar Wright’s The Running Man and JJ Abrams' untitled blockbuster which stars Glen Powell, Jenna Ortega, and Samuel L. Jackson.
