‘It’s bittersweet’ - popular Scottish cafe and shop put up for sale

A coffee shop and retail space which has made a name for itself in its neighbourhood has been put up for sale.

It’s all change for No.40 by Bruin, a popular neighbourhood coffee stop and shop on New Kirk Road street in Bearsden, just outside of Glasgow.

Within the past week owners Rebecca and husband Adam posted on social media that after “much reflection” they’d made the decision to sell the business.

The couple took on the business from the previous owner in 2022 and turned it into a thriving coffee shop which also sells pastries, Freedom Bakery bread and a range of local and Scottish food and drinks.

As well as this there is a small selection of curated wines, spirits as well as gifts, artwork and beauty products. The shop’s monthly wine clubs have become a particular highlight, often selling out.

Speaking to The Scotsman, Rebecca said: “It wasn’t a decision that we came to quickly or lightly. We have poured absolutely everything into it. We came to a point where we stood back and looked at the business. It’s in a really good position and we looked at what it needed, which is growth and we just felt that in order to provide that growth we’d need to double down and pour more of ourselves into it.

“It came to an inflection point where our life is so full and I didn’t feel like I couldn’t personally do that. It needs more events, it could do with opening more days and longer hours. We just felt that, from a personal point of view, we have a young family and lots of other things going on. We’re really proud of what we’ve achieved in the four years we’ve had the business. What we have now is a solid foundational platform for someone else to take on and add their own flair to and really just grow from what we’ve got. I really believe that our community really needs a business like ours in it.

“Because we are in a position of strength we’re not in a hurry (to sell). We are just looking for the right person or business to take it forward. For me this is about as personal as it gets. I’m interested in having face to face conversations with anyone interested in buying the business. It’s been heartwarming to see the amount of interest from people.”

Rebecca and Adam aren’t leaving Bearsden and instead will experience the shop from the other side of the counter. Anyone interested in buying the business should email [email protected]
