Firefighters are continuing to “dampen down hotspots” at a disused building in Edinburgh city centre after a blaze tore through it in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Seven fire engines rushed to the former Debenhams building on Princes Street after the alarm was raised at around 2.50am.

Hours later, at around 9.20am, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service released a statement saying: "Operations control mobilised six appliances and two height appliances plus supporting resources to the scene and firefighters worked through the early hours of the morning the contain and extinguish the flames.

"Crews continue to extinguish and dampen down hotspots and will be in attendance for some time."

Princes Street, Frederick Street and Castle Street remain closed to traffic, with diversions in place, while police have said that inquiries into the cause of the blaze are ongoing.

Here are 13 pictures that tell the story of the fire.
