IKEA opens doors to brand-new Aberdeen store in Union Square

The opening of the new Union Square IKEA store was marked with a ribbon cutting ceremony attended by co-workers and Jack Middleton, the MSP for Aberdeen Central.
IKEA has opened its brand-new Plan and Order Point in Aberdeen’s Union Square, nearly a year after closing the Altens store.
The Swedish retailer had been searching for a location closer to the city centre following the closure of north-east branch, which left shoppers in Aberdeen making a 262-mile round trip to the nearest IKEA in Edinburgh.
The opening of the new Union Square store, which is based within the old Decathalon unit, was marked with a ribbon cutting ceremony attended by the team of 16 co-workers and the MSP for Aberdeen Central, Jack Middleton.

Plan and Order Points are dedicated to kitchen, bedroom and living room planning where customers can visit for tailored design consultations to help create their ideal spaces. Customers can book a free appointment to start their design journey with one of the Aberdeen store’s planning specialists or use the in-store self-service tools to design their own solution.

At IKEA Plan and Order Points, customers can order from the entire IKEA product range, with the option for free next day collection or home delivery. The store offers a collection area for orders made online, as well as providing a service for customers wanting to return any IKEA purchase.
Kevin Coventry, Market Manager at IKEA, said: “It was fantastic to open the doors of our brand-new Plan and Order Point in Aberdeen this morning, and to welcome our first customers inside. Our new store is designed to inspire, offering customers the opportunity to explore our range of kitchen and storage solutions with options available for every household and budget. Now that we’ve launched, we can’t wait to help more Aberdonians design their dream home spaces.”
Douglas Lumsden, MP for Aberdeen South, said: “I am delighted to welcome IKEA’s new Plan and Order Point in the city centre. It is fantastic to see a global brand like IKEA strengthening its presence in Aberdeen, and the new location will hopefully allow more people to access their products while bringing wider benefits to our local economy."

Jack Middleton, MSP for Aberdeen Central, added: “It's great to see IKEA's new Plan and Order Point opening in Union Square. The investment in Aberdeen, in the new city centre location, is really welcome. Aberdeen is a great place to live, work, and do business, and IKEA's continued presence really emphasises that.”
IKEA closed its Aberdeen Order and Collection Point in Wellington Square on 1 March as the retailer transitioned to its new planning-led format in Aberdeen city centre, as part of its strategy to bring the brand closer to where the many people live, work and socialise.
The new store bolsters the retailer’s presence in Scotland, complementing existing IKEA stores in Edinburgh and Glasgow, a recently opened Plan and Order Point in Dundee, and in-home planning services available throughout the Inverness area.
IKEA Plan and Order Point Aberdeen will open Monday to Friday 10am – 8pm and Saturday and Sundays 10am - 6pm.
