It is time to move on for architect Roderick James

The world-famous AirShip 002 holiday home has come on the market, alongwith two of its equally-quirky neighbours.

The architecturally-designed trio of properties at Druim Na Cracaig on the Morvern Peninsula near Oban is being sold by Savills for offers over £750,000.

Designed by architect Roderick James and designer Amanda Markham, the collection has gained international recognition for its innovative architecture and unique visitor experience, earning a reputation as one of Scotland's most distinctive hospitality offerings.

At the heart of the portfolio is AirShip 002, the aluminium-clad cabin that has become one of the UK's most wish-listed Airbnb properties. Its distinctive curved form, dragonfly windows and dramatic coastal setting have earned worldwide acclaim and attracted guests from as far afield as Japan.

Mr James, owner of Druim Na Cracaig portfolio, said: : "Over the years, the holiday lets have earned an exceptional reputation, drawing international guests from as far afield as Japan, all excited by the experience of staying somewhere truly different.

"The portfolio offers an excellent commercial opportunity, generating around £100,000 gross annual income while requiring relatively little time to operate.

“It has been hugely rewarding to share this special place with visitors from around the world."

The success of AirShip 002 inspired two further retreats: The PilotHouse, a striking two-storey hideaway with panoramic sea views, and The Captain's Cabin, a compact coastal escape featuring a private rooftop viewing balcony with views over the Sound of Mull.

The three properties have appeared on television shows, including Scotland’s Great Escapes and Alan Cumming’s Paradise Homes, and regularly make it onto lists of the most offbeat and unique holiday rentals.

Mr James previously ran his own architectural practice, specialising in oak-framed buildings across the UK, and designed new timber roofs for the Great Hall at Stirling Castle and Windsor Castle, following the fire.

He later got involved in social projects to build homes where they were needed most and teach project management and trade skills, including to disadvantaged young people and ex-offenders.

The income from the three holiday homes has helped to support his charitable work. Mr James has also built at least 15 homes on the Morvern Peninsula with a project to build cabins in Rwanda also underway.

Also for sale on the four-acre site is The Old Chapel, a two-bedroom owner's or housekeeper's residence, alongside extensive parking, storage, outbuildings and workshop space.

Iona Conn, Property Agent, Savills Glasgow, comments: "Few hospitality businesses combine such imaginative architecture, proven commercial success and an utterly captivating setting. AirShip 002, The PilotHouse and The Captain's Cabin have become destinations in their own right, attracting visitors from across the globe to experience this remarkable corner of the west coast.

"The portfolio represents a rare opportunity to acquire an internationally recognised tourism business with an established income stream, all set within one of the country's most spectacular coastal locations."

Two further residential properties, Tigh Darach and Tigh Na Mara, are also available for sale.
