Storm Bram Scotland: 90mph winds to batter parts of Scotland as Met Office issues 4 weather warnings

A yellow weather warning for rain has also been issued by the forecaster.

Parts of Scotland have been hit with several upcoming weather warnings including an amber alert for winds that could reach up to 90mph.

Storm Bram - named by Met Eireann, Ireland's equivalent of the Met Office - is expected to develop rapidly on Tuesday, moving north to the west of the UK but bringing heavy rain and strengthening winds across the country.

Some of the strongest winds will come to the north-west of Scotland. The main area of rain will clear away to the north-east during Tuesday.

But, rain and strong winds are likely to continue across Scotland into Wednesday.

An amber weather warning for wind is set to impact parts of the Highlands, the Outer Hebrides, as well as Argyll and Bute from 4pm until 11.59pm on Tuesday.

Areas may experience gusts of up to 90mph

It reads: “A short spell of very strong southwesterly winds are expected to develop as Storm Bram passes close to northwest Scotland on Tuesday evening and night.

“Gusts of 70-80 mph are expected for a few hours with a chance that a few places may experience gusts of up to 90 mph. Heavy rain will accompany these strong winds and may exacerbate impacts.”

It is predicted there will be potential for roads, bridges, and railway lines to close and there may be delays and cancellations to bus, train, ferry services and flights.

They added that damage to buildings and homes is possible, with roofs blown off and power lines brought down, while there is also potential that flying debris could result in a danger to life.

Meanwhile, two further yellow weather warnings have been issued for wind that cover the whole of Scotland.

From 12pm on Tuesday to 6am on Wednesday, one warning has been issued covering most of the north-east, south, borders, and central parts of the country.

This includes Edinburgh, Glasgow, Ayrshire, Perth and Kinross, Aberdeenshire, Moray, and more.

Another warning, which lasts from 12pm on Tuesday to 12pm on Wednesday, covers the Highlands, Moray, Orkney, Argyll and Bute, North Ayrshire and more.

The warnings include that some roads and bridges may close, there may be injuries and danger to life from flying debris, and power cuts may occur with the potential to affect other services like mobile phone coverage.

Rain warning for parts of central Scotland

As well as the three wind warnings, there has also been a warning for rain in some parts of Scotland from 6am to 12pm on Tuesday.

This is expected to affect areas including Edinburgh, Glasgow, Perth and Kinross, Stirling and more.

The warning reads: “A spell of heavy rain is expected to move north across the Central Belt during Tuesday morning.

“Many areas are expected to see 20-30 mm of rain, most of which will fall in a 4-6 hour period. A few places over higher ground may see 40 mm.”

The forecaster is warning that spray and flooding on roads may make journey times longer, bus and train services may be affected, and there is a chance of flooding of a few homes and businesses.
