Storm Chandra: Snow and rain warnings across Scotland as Met Office names Storm Chandra

Some roads and railways are likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services.

Two weather warnings covering parts of Scotland have been issued by The Met Office, while the forecaster has announced the next named storm coming to the UK.

The Met Office has announced the next named storm as Chandra, which is forecast to bring strong winds, heavy rain and snow across much of the UK on Monday night and Tuesday.

This comes as the forecaster has issued two yellow weather warnings for rain and snow in parts of Scotland.

The first warning, which covers areas of the country including parts of Aberdeenshire, the Highlands, and Perth and Kinross, lasts from 6am on Tuesday until 11.59pm.

It says heavy rain is expected to turn to snow on high ground and may lead to some transport and power disruption.

Outbreaks of rain will develop widely on Tuesday, becoming persistent and heavy at times, falling as snow on high ground. 20-35mm of rain is likely to low levels with some places seeing 40-50mm.

Whilst accumulating snow is unlikely at low-levels, there will be a sharp increase in snow depths with elevation.

Meanwhile, the second rain and snow warning covers a large part of the Lowlands including the Borders from 12am on Tuesday until 5pm.

The warning read: “Heavy rain will turn to snow over high ground which may lead to some travel and power disruption on Tuesday.”

In this area, outbreaks of rain are expected to spread northwards on Monday night into Tuesday, falling as snow on high ground.

Rainfall accumulations of 20-30mm are likely fairly widely with 40-50mm possible in places.

The Met Office added that strong, gusty winds, especially to the west of hills, may exacerbate the potential for transport disruption.

What areas are covered?

The areas covered by the warning that begins at 6am on Tuesday include:

  • Angus
  • Perth and Kinross
  • Stirling
  • Aberdeenshire
  • Moray
  • Highland
  • Argyll and Bute

  • Edinburgh

  • East Ayrshire
  • South Ayrshire

What should I expect?

They added that flooding of a few homes and businesses is likely.
