Scotland Gritter Names 2025: The funniest Scottish gritter names – including new additions Clearopathra and Den-ice Law

Here are the funniest Scottish gritter names and how to track them in 2025, including new additions such as Clearopathra, Den-ice Law and Snowasis.
The cold weather has well and truly arrived in Scotland, with weather warnings in place and efforts being made to keep roads clear.
The cold snap has left large parts of the country facing wintry hazards such as snow and ice, with conditions expected to continue as temperatures drop below freezing overnight.
Helping keep roads free from snow and ice is Scotland’s fleet of more than 240 gritters. Based at around 42 depots along the major road networks, these vehicles are helping to ensure disruption is as minimal as possible.
And while you may not think twice about seeing one, Scottish gritters are very well known around the world for one thing in particular - their unique names.
Why Scotland names its gritters
The idea to name Scotland’s gritters can be traced back to Amey, a company responsible for maintaining motorways and bridges, and local councils. School pupils would lead the charge for ideas within some councils, while in 2020 Amey opened up their appeal to the wider public which led to an overwhelming response not just from Scotland, but around the world.

Now a firm tradition, there are more than a hundred Scottish gritters which have been bestowed with hilarious and cheeky names which can be tracked online.
In addition, each year there are a few new vehicles added to the fleet which leads to even more weird and wonderful names being slapped on the side of these snow-destroying lorries.
Where to find Scotland’s Gritter Tracker
If you want to track Scotland’s gritters the full map covering all of the country’s trunk roads can be found at traffic.gov.scot/gritter-tracker.
The interactive map will show exactly where all of the fleet is at any given moment, as well as their names and location history.
Some local authorities also have their own unique trackers - and names - such as Dumfries and Galloway Council, Highland Council, Aberdeenshire Council, Falkirk Council and more.

How to submit your gritter name suggestions
If you would like to get involved with naming your local gritters, then you are in luck as Amey are currently accepting submissions for the North East and South West.
All names must be family-friendly, and though they have previously teamed up with brands such as Irn-Bru (Grits You Thru) and Tunnock’s (Caramelt Wafer), they do ask you avoid copyrighted names or trademarks where possible; though spoof names or puns are acceptable.
There is no limit on entries, with names set to be applied next winter, so from November 2026 onward.
For Amey South West, entries will close at midnight on Sunday, February 1 2026. As for the North East, entries will close at 5pm on Friday, December 19 2025.
