The Office for Rail and Road has today revealed the most and least used railway stations in Scotland, based on the number of ‘entries and exits’ between April 2023 and March 2024.
It was part of Britain-wide statistics that found London Liverpool Street Station had retained its title as Great Britain's most used railway station in 2023-24, with 94.5 million journeys starting or ending there.
Outwith London, Glasgow Central Station was the third busiest station in Britain, with 25 million journeys, behind only Birmingham New Street and Manchester Piccadilly.
At the other end of the scale, many stations in Scotland only attracted a few hundred passengers.
Here are the 10 busiest.

5. Edinburgh Haymarket Station
Edinburgh's second largest station completes the top five with 3 million passengers coming or going over the 12 months. When it was opened in 1842 Haymarket was the original terminus of the Glasgow-Edinburgh line, prior to Waverley being opened. | Google Maps

6. Partick Station
A third entry in the top 10 for Glasgow (and there's still one to go), with Partick Station seeing 2.9 million people in and out of its platforms over the annual period. Located in the West End, it's also a stop on the city's Subway. | Google

7. Stirling Station
A total of 2.4 million passengers arrived or departed from Stirling Railway Station between 2023 and 2024. Located on the former Caledonian Railway main line between Glasgow and Perth, the current station buildings were constructed between 1912 and 1915. | Google Maps
