Scotland airport disruption RECAP: Passengers facing major delays across the country after technical issues

Follow along with The Scotsman’s live blog for updates.

Flights have been delayed in Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England following a now resolved air traffic control issue.

National Air Traffic Services (Nats) inisted today’s issue was unrelated to a software fault at Nats earlier this month which caused more than 2,000 flights to be cancelled.

Airports in Edinburgh, Belfast and Manchester were registering delayed flights and urging passengers to check with their airlines.

It’s understood around 200 flights have been affected as a result of the technical issues, with many passengers left with cancelled plans or having to be booked onto flights later in the week.

A Nats spokesperson said on Monday morning: “Our engineers are continuing to investigate the issue at our Prestwick centre in Scotland.

“Airports south of Manchester are broadly unaffected, however flights heading north and flights departing Scottish airports are currently subject to some delay.

“Passengers should check with their airlines. This is unrelated to the issue two weeks ago. We apologise for the disruption.”

Airlines expressed their dismay and anger at “yet another” ATC incident, and Ryanair repeated its calls for Nats chief executive Martin Rolfe to resign.

EasyJet said the latest flight disruption “calls into question the resilience of Nats’ systems”, and Jet2 said customers and airlines need “action, accountability and proper resilience”.

According to Ryanair, more than 25,000 of its passengers were expected to be disrupted and more than 140 of its flights had been delayed on Monday.

Chief operations officer for Ryanair Neal McMahon said: “Martin Rolfe has presided over repeated system failures, repeated passenger disruption and repeated failures to deliver an effective back-up system.

“Enough is enough.

“Martin Rolfe should resign today.”
