Queensferry Crossing: diversion revealed ahead of overnight closures

Traffic is set to be diverted as overnight closures begin for roadworks on the Queensferry Crossing.

The southbound carriageway will be closed from 10:00pm on Friday, April 24 and Sunday 26th to allow the work to take place, with all traffic being shifted on to the Forth Road Bridge - and on Saturday 25th there will be a full crossing closure to practice deployment of the automated diversion system.

BEAR Scotland needs to close the road south to replace the overhead gantry signage at the central and south tower. Other work planned includes refreshing of white lines on the main carriageway and replacement of missing road studs, inspections of bridge elements including the wind louvres, parapets, carriageway surfacing and overhead gantries, removal of old architectural lighting from central tower, and maintenance of the low-level bollard lighting

The southbound carriageway of the M90 will be closed between Junction 1B Ferrytoll and Junction 1A Queensferry with traffic will be diverted from Junction 1B Ferrytoll onto the A9000 Forth Road Bridge, exiting via Echline Junction and heading west on the A904 to rejoin the M90 at Junction 1A.

On the Saturday night the crossing will be closed completely from 10:00pm until 8:00am for a full practice deployment of the automated diversion system. All traffic will be diverted via the Forth Road Bridge.

David Bishop, BEAR Scotland’s south east bridges manager, said: “The automated barrier system on the M90 significantly reduces the time it takes to open a diversion via the Forth Road Bridge, should the Queensferry Crossing need to close for any reason.

“These overnight closures will allow us to carry out essential maintenance works, inspections on the Queensferry Crossing and to test the automated diversion system to identify and address any issues so that it is ready to be used if required.

“It is important that road users comply with red X signs above the carriageway when these appear, as the diversion route cannot be opened until traffic on the motorway has stopped. If there are red X signs above all lanes, you must come to a stop.”
