Woman, 19, seriously injured after being struck by tram in Edinburgh

Emergency services have locked down a large section of Leith Walk after a 19-year-old woman was hit by a tram
A 19-year-old woman has been taken to hospital with serious injuries after being struck by a tram on Edinburgh’s Leith Walk.
Emergency services were called to the collision on Leith Walk, near the Scotmid Co-op store between Albert Street and Pilrig Street, at about 8.50am on Sunday.
The pedestrian was treated at the scene before being transported to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. Police Scotland confirmed that no one else was injured in the incident.

The incident has led to the closure of a large section of Leith Walk. The road remains shut between Crighton Place and Albert Street while specialist road policing officers carry out crash investigation work.
This closure has caused severe travel disruption in the Capital, compounding existing traffic issues and road closures already in place for the Edinburgh Marathon.
Police have strongly advised all road users to avoid the area and seek alternative routes while the scene is cleared and investigated.
According to unconfirmed local reports, the woman was crossing the road carrying bags of household rubbish at the time of the collision.

Public transport has also been significantly impacted. Shortly after 9am, Edinburgh Trams initially changed to a split service, before reducing operations to a part-route service.
In an update posted to X, formerly Twitter, the operator confirmed the continued disruption to its network.
An Edinburgh Trams spokesperson stated: “We are still part route between Edinburgh Airport and St Andrews Square. We have ticket acceptance between St Andrew Square and Newhaven in both directions. We apologise for the inconvenience this will cause.”
Lothian Buses also confirmed that its Leith Walk services have been diverted away from the scene of the crash.
Road policing officers are now appealing for witnesses or anyone with relevant information to come forward to assist with their ongoing inquiries.
Sergeant Michael Thomson said: “Our enquires are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and we are asking anyone who can help who has not already spoken to officers to get in touch.
“If you can assist please calls us on 101, quoting incident number 1043 of Sunday, 24 May, 2026.”
