Busy Leith street remains closed more than 24 hours after gas leak reports
A busy Leith street remains closed to cars and buses more than 24 hours after a reported gas leak.
Bernard Street continues to be closed as engineers from SGN carry out essential repairs between Shore and Constitution Street.
Cars and buses are being diverted with motorists told to expect heavier-than-normal traffic in the immediate vicinity and neighbouring roads.
A spokesperson for SGN said that they could not confirm how long the closure and diversions may be in place for.
They said: “We’re carrying out emergency repairs to our gas network in Bernard Street, following reports of a smell of gas.
“To allow our engineers to work safely and carry out these essential repairs, Bernard Street is closed to motorists between Shore and Constitution Street.
“At the moment, it’s too early to say how long it will take to complete our emergency work, but we’re aware this is a busy area and will be working as quickly as possible to have the road re-opened.”

Buses are also affected by the closure. Lothian Buses confirmed that the 34 service, would not serve Bernard Street due to the closure. Surrounding roads, including the Shore, also saw delays.
A spokesperson said: “Due to emergency utility works, part of Bernard Street has been closed until further notice.”
