A Greek man has been found guilty of murdering a Scottish woman in Crete 17 years ago.

The body of Jean Hanlon, 53, from Dumfries, was found in water at Heraklion harbour in 2009.

Initially, the death was ruled as an accidental drowning, but her family suspected foul play and campaigned for the investigation to be reopened.

Greek authorities agreed to reopen the case in 2024, leading to the arrest of a man the following year.

A 54-year-old man was found guilty following a four-day trial at the Lasithi Law Courts in Neapoli.

Under Greek law he will not be named until the court process - including appeals - is over.

The court recognised his diminished responsibility due to mental health conditions.

Mrs Hanlon, previously known as Jean Porter, disappeared on March 9, 2009, but police and British Embassy officials in Greece were not informed until several days later.

She had moved to the village of Kato Gouves four years earlier to work in the seasonal tourism trade and returned to Scotland and England regularly to visit her family, including her three sons.
