Iconic Glasgow nightclub The Garage, where Prince and Radiohead played, put up for sale

The Garage has played host to many famous names over the years

An iconic Glasgow nightclub where Prince once played a surprise set has been put up for sale.

The Garage, on Sauchiehall Street, has been a cornerstone of the city’s vibrant music scene since opening in 1994.

As well as Prince, who played an after-show gig there in 1995 after a sell-out show at Glasgow's SECC, a host of famous acts have performed there, including One Direction, Biffy Clyro, Kasabian, Coldplay and Radiohead.

Owner Donald MacLeod described The Garage as a "cultural institution" - but said he was putting it up for sale to focus on other business interests.

The club venue has capacity for up to 1,800 revellers and comprises three different venues across four floors.

Estate agents CDLH, who called it as a "landmark venue" boasting a "reputation that extends far beyond Glasgow", said they expected "strong interest" from a range of buyers.

They added: "The Garage is one of Glasgow’s longest running and best-known nightclub and live entertainment venues. Established in 1994, it has built a strong brand identity as a high-energy, multi-room nightclub, offering a diverse and dynamic entertainment experience.

"As both a late-night club and a live event venue, The Garage serves a dual business model that captures both the student-driven nightlife market and the live music/events economy.

"Music lovers can explore our three established live music venues: The Garage, G2, and The Attic, which collectively host over 250 bands each year. Each space is equipped with top-class sound and lighting systems."

Mr MacLeod, who also owns the Cathouse club in Glasgow, said in a statement: "It has been an absolute privilege and honour to own and operate such a well-loved venue, whose history, energy, location and reputation has placed it on the world's stage.

"As I start to focus on developing other areas of my media, promotion and leisure portfolios, this feels like the right time to pass the baton to a new owner, who along with our fantastic management team and staff, will help build on this incredible legacy."
