Cancer Research : Popular UK charity shop chain to close 8 Scottish stores - full list

Additionally, its online marketplace will be phased out in early 2026.

A major charity shop chain has confirmed it will close eight of its Scottish stores.

Cancer Research UK said the closures, of which there will currently be 88 across the UK, are part of a plan to save £12.4 million over the next five years - money that will be put directly into life-saving research.

The charity cited escalating operational costs including increases in employer National Insurance contributions and inflation hitting energy and logistics as the primary drivers for the exit.

Additionally, its online marketplace will be phased out in early 2026, ending sales via external resale platforms.

The first round of closures, which will see 88 UK stores permanently shut by May 2026, include Scottish locations in the following areas:

  • Airdrie
  • Clydebank
  • Coatbridge
  • Edinburgh
  • Falkirk
  • Aberdeen
  • Perth

The exact stores that will be closing have not yet been confirmed.

Across the UK, about 600 staff members and around 3,000 volunteers will be impacted.

Chief executive of Cancer Research UK, Michelle Mitchell OBE said of the restructure in 2025: “I am deeply grateful to our dedicated supporters, volunteers and staff for their role and contribution in beating cancer together.

"Without action, we predict many of our shops will become unprofitable.

“A smaller, high-performing retail operation will mean we will fund more life-saving cancer research and better serve our customers, staff and volunteers.

"This news will be difficult.

“Our decisions have been taken after serious consideration. We’re committed to supporting everyone affected by these changes, and will provide clear information and support throughout the process."
