'Robbed of justice': Death of murder accused in prison denies Vikki Soloman's family answers says MSP

Family of Edinburgh mum “denied answers” after death of man accused of murder

The family of an Edinburgh mother have been “robbed of justice” after the man accused of murdering her died in prison just days after he was charged.

Vikki Soloman’s former partner Lee Greenan was found dead at HMP Edinburgh on the morning of July 26 - just six days after the 44-year-old aesthetician died from serious injuries sustained during a ‘disturbance’ at a property in East Craigs on Monday.

Police Scotland said there did “not appear to be any suspicious circumstances” surrounding Greenan’s death, which comes just days after he first appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Thursday, July 23.

He made no plea to charges of murder, assault to injury and assault and was remanded in custody. He was due to appear at the court again within eight days.

But news of his death broke on Sunday afternoon after the Scottish Prison Service published his name on its ‘Death In Custody’ list.

Alex Cole-Hamilton, leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats and MSP for Edinburgh North Western, described the incident as a “shocking development” and said his thoughts were with Ms Soloman’s loved ones.

He said: “Deaths in custody always lead to searching questions for the prison service. However, my thoughts today turn to Vikki’s family who may be denied answers about why Vikki was snatched from them at such a young age.

“Her death is a stark reminder of how far we need to travel as a society to make sure women and children are safe from men’s violence in their own homes.”

Mr Cole-Hamilton had previously paid tribute to Ms Soloman, with whom he worked closely as new laws around the beauty industry went through the Scottish Parliament. He said she was a “proud ambassador” of the industry who had an “effervescent charm”.

Greenan’s death also sparked outrage on social media, with many saying Ms Soloman and her family had been denied justice.

One said: “Vikki has been robbed of justice. Her killer should have been tried, convicted and punished.”

Another said: “My heart breaks for Vikki and for her children, family and friends. She deserved justice.”

And another said: “Such a tragedy, so unnecessary on all counts. Two lives lost and two families and children whose lives will never be the same.”

A Scottish Prison Service spokesperson said: “Every death, whether in prison custody or in our communities, is a tragedy for all those who knew and supported the individual.

“Following the death of someone in our care, Police Scotland are advised, and the matter reported to the Procurator Fiscal. Fatal Accident Inquiries are held in due course.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 8.55am on Sunday, 26 July, 2026, we were made aware of the death of a 46-year-old man at HMP Edinburgh.

“There do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”

Emergency services were called to reports of a disturbance at a property on Craigievar Square in Edinburgh at around 8.45pm on Monday, July 20.

Officers found Ms Soloman with serious injuries and she was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

Greenan’s death has now been reported to the Procurator Fiscal.

By law a Fatal Accident Inquiry, which will examine the circumstances around the death, must take place.
