Katharine Hay, The Scotsman’s rural affairs correspondent, exchanged her desk for the open road - or footpath - around seven months ago.

She has since walked more than 1,000 miles, pitching her tent everywhere from the Borders to the Highlands and islands, as well as enjoying the hospitality of countless friends, contacts and strangers.

Katharine joined Alistair Grant, The Scotsman’s political editor, on the latest episode of The Steamie podcast to talk about exactly why she decided to walk around Scotland.

She reveals her highs and lows, her favourite places and experiences, and what she has learned along the way. Katharine also shares some tips on how to survive and stay dry in some of Scotland’s most remote locations.
