As we get closer to the 2026 Holyrood election, eyes turn to who will not be standing for re-election.
So far the biggest name to rule themselves out of contention is former first minister Humza Yousaf.
But speculation remains about some other high-profile names in the Scottish Parliament, including former first minister Nicola Sturgeon.
We take a look at all the MSPs who have confirmed they will be standing down at the 2026 election.

9. Michael Matheson - SNP
Michael Matheson has been an MSP since 1999, but will be standing down in 2026. Mr Matheson was forced to resign as health secretary last year after racking up £11,000 on a parliamentary iPad while on a family holiday to Morocco. Initially he claimed this cash on his expenses, but was forced to apologise and pay it back after it was revealed his sons had used the device to livestream football matches. Mr Matheson said: “During my time in parliament, I was honoured to serve in government for 13 years across five different ministerial portfolios. “I will always be deeply grateful to have had the opportunity to serve in government and to implement policy in justice, health, transport and climate change that has made Scotland a better place for all.” | Jane Barlow/Press Association

10. Natalie Don-Innes - SNP
Natalie Don-Innes has been the children, young people and the promise minister since 2023 and has been the MSP for Renfrewshire North and West since May 2021. In announcing her resignation, she said: “This has probably been the most difficult decision I have ever made and one that I have wrestled with. “However, I feel that at this time, it is the right one for me and my family. “I have a young family, one that I am thinking of growing further and while I have balanced my family life and parliamentary life since 2021, it has come with the sacrifices that being an elected member and a mother brings.” | Andrew Milligan/PA Wire

11. Richard Leonard - Labour
Former Scottish Labour leader Richard Leonard is the first from the Labour benches to announce he will not be standing for re-election. The Central Scotland MSP said: “While I will be standing down from the Scottish Parliament, I will not be standing down from the causes I believe in and that I have spent my entire adult life fighting for. “From the miners’ strike 40 years ago to the battle today for jobs at Grangemouth, I have always been on the side of the people and I always will be. “That drive for democracy, for international peace and disarmament, to end poverty and inequality, that burning flame of socialism. “That is what I will continue to campaign for, for as long as I have got breath in my body.” Photo: John Devlin

12. Richard Lochhead - SNP
Business Minister Richard Lochhead is the first member of the current government to announce they will not stand for re-election. Mr Lochhead has been an MSP since devolution, serving as a North East MSP from 1999 until 2006, and as the MSP for Moray from 2006 until the present day. He served as rural affairs secretary under both Nicola Sturgeon and Alex Salmond, and in more recent years has held various junior ministerial positions including higher education minister, employment minister and trade minister. In announcing his resignation he says he seeks “fresh challenges” outside of frontline politics. | Fraser Bremner/Press Association
