AROUND 1,000 people are expected to attend a special “service of reconciliation” to mark the end of the Scottish independence referendum campaign.

Members of Better Together and Yes Scotland will give readings during the Church of Scotland service at St Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh on Sunday.

Rt Rev John Chalmers, the moderator of the General Assembly, will preach a message of “healing where there has been hurt and unity where there has been division,” the Church said.

Yesterday, the Church encouraged voters to come together in a “spirit of unity” amid growing fears of public disorder.

Rt Rev Chalmers said: “The Church of Scotland, as a national church, is well placed to bring people back together in a spirit of reconciliation.

“(Sunday’s) service of unity and common purpose is an opportunity for politicians to send the clearest possible message that everyone has a role to play in building Scotland’s future.”
