Scottish minister named one of Time Magazine’s top 100 climate leaders in the world

The SNP Cabinet secretary has made the list compiled by Time Magazine

Energy Secretary Gillian Martin has been named as one of Time Magazine’s top 100 climate leaders for her work on the just transition.

The Time100 Climate list, which coincides with the COP30 climate summit in Brazil that Ms Martin is attending, comprises the world’s leading politicians, researchers and activists who are fighting climate change.

Ms Martin said: “Absolutely bowled over to be included in Time Magazine’s Climate 2025 100.

“Scotland must stay on the course - our public health, resilience of our communities and economy depends on it.

“It’s not just the right thing to do, it’s the smart thing to do.”

First Minister John Swinney said he was “delighted” at the accolade. The magazine said it had awarded Ms Martin a place on the list for her work on shifting away from oil and gas to renewables in the north-east.

The publication said: “Soon after taking office as Cabinet secretary for climate action and energy in June, Scottish politician Gillian Martin helped launch a pilot programme to support an initial 200 oil and gas workers’ transition into clean energy jobs in the country’s north-east, a region long seen as Europe’s oil capital.

“The endeavour will provide career support and funding for training to move into sectors such as offshore wind, onshore wind, hydrogen and carbon capture.”

The magazine added: “Martin’s initiative is just one part of a more than £120 million investment the Scottish Government has made to transform the region from an oil and gas hub to a net-zero community - and create green jobs along the way.”

Ms Martin said: “I am proud that the Scottish Government’s leadership on climate action has been recognised in this way - particularly during COP30, where we will be using our platform to call for greater action on climate change and to advocate for climate justice for countries in the Global South.

“I am also pleased to see this recognition of the Scottish Government’s commitment to a just transition - creating green energy jobs and ensuring communities are not left behind.

“We are at a pivotal moment in the global fight against climate change - and Scotland will continue to do our part to drive progress at home and advocate for stronger action internationally.”
