Former Labour MSP Colin Smyth 'nearly hit pedestrian while drink driving' in Edinburgh

The charges against the former Labour MSP include that he allegedly mounted the pavement while drink driving and nearly hit a pedestrian

A former Labour MSP is facing allegations he narrowly avoiding hitting a pedestrian while drink driving in Edinburgh.

Colin Smyth is accused of three charges in relation to an incident in the early hours of November 2 last year.

The 53-year-old former politician was due to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Wednesday.

However, the case was postponed until next month for procedural reasons.

Prosecutors allege that around 2am, Mr Smyth drove dangerously, mounting the pavement on High Street in Edinburgh city centre.

Charges detail how he is alleged to have narrowly missed a person on the pavement, collided with a parked vehicle and was speeding.

He is also accused of crashing into two electric bollards directly outside Edinburgh City Chambers before revving his engine and repeatedly getting out of and into the car.

The charges also claim he failed to report the accident and that he was twice the drink-drive limit at the time the crash occurred.

All alleged offences happened while Mr Smyth was on bail from Dumfries Sheriff Court.
