Fire crews remain in attendance on Princes Street following a blaze that has caused significant damage to one of the city centre’s most striking buildings.
Formerly the Palace Hotel and more recently occupied by Debenhams, the site was undergoing plans to become a Zedwell hotel when the fire destroyed its roof and upper floors.
Emergency services were called at 2.52am on Thursday, with seven fire engines and three specialist appliances battling the flames throughout the morning.
While the fire is now well well under control, crews are continuing to dampen down hotspots, and the public has been advised to avoid the area due to ongoing cordons and disruption.
Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries, though approximately 10 residents were evacuated from a nearby Rose Street property and temporarily rehoused.
The incident has triggered widespread sadness among locals, who mourn the loss of yet another iconic city landmark following previous fires in the area, such as the historic Jenners building.
Transport remains severely affected, with Edinburgh Trams running a limited service between Edinburgh Airport and the West End only, and diversions in place for local bus routes.
As an investigation involving Police Scotland is already under way, the city council has confirmed that a full structural assessment of the site will take place once the area is declared safe.
In the meantime, residents and visitors are urged to follow all safety guidance from emergency responders while the long-term impact on this B-listed building is determined.
Below is a selection of images showing the aftermath of the devastating blaze as our brave firefighters work tirelessly to try and save the historic structure.
