Scotsman Obituaries: Gordon Black, man who helped define Scottish hairdressing for nearly five decades

Gordon Black, hairdresser. Born: 28 October 1953. Died: 29 October 2025, aged 72

Gordon Black, co-founder of Angus Gordon Hairdressing & Beauty, passed away in October 2025 in Edinburgh’s Royal Infirmary.

Born in Fraserburgh, Gordon began his career at James Cowie Salon in the town before joining Steiner’s at the North British Hotel in Edinburgh, where he met Brian Rafferty and Angus Johnston, friendships that would shape his life and career. In 1977, Gordon and Angus opened their first salon together on Edinburgh’s Frederick Street, founding what would become one of Scotland’s most respected hairdressing chains.

Renowned for his creativity, professionalism, and warmth, Gordon helped define Scottish hairdressing for nearly five decades. He and Angus also collaborated with award-winning boutique owner Jane Davidson on a series of celebrated fashion shows that raised thousands for charities. Gordon’s talents were widely recognised, winning Best Hairstyle for Wella Vogue with his close friend and model Lee Miller. Testament to Gordon’s talent was the loyalty of his client base, many of whom were like family to him - and included Dames Shirley Bassey and Esther Rantzen. As the business grew, additional salons opened in Edinburgh’s North Bridge and Blackhall, as well as Perth and Musselburgh, each reflecting Gordon and Angus’s commitment to excellence by providing extensive training to encourage and inspire the next generation’s talent.

Away from the salon, Gordon loved skiing and spending time with his family and friends. He will be remembered for his enthusiasm, generosity, and the joy he brought to those around him.

Gordon Black leaves behind a lasting legacy in the success of Angus Gordon Hairdressing, in the stylists he mentored, and in the many lives he touched with his kindness and creativity. Gordon is survived by his wife, Marie and children Jacqui and Richard, Jacqui’s husband Andy and their sons Bruce and Rory. Gordon and Marie tragically lost eldest son Gavin, to cancer in 2023.
