Why Hearts have done something truly special – even if they don't win the league

Other clubs should look at how Hearts have built a team capable of challenging the Old Firm for the league title

Many (or quite possibly all) Hearts fans took a dim view of the late penalty for title rivals Celtic that secured their win over Motherwell. However, at least now the final game cannot see a repeat of the heartbreak of 1986 when the Jambos lost the title on the last day of the season on goal difference.

Instead, Hearts will take a historic league title if they beat or draw with Celtic, while they must win. Ending the Old Firm’s four-decade dominance of Scottish football would be a remarkable feat, but even if they fall short, they should still regard the season as a considerable success.

After Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool lost the Europa League final in 2016, he told the players that this was not an ending, but a beginning. Whatever the bounce of the ball on Saturday, Hearts have demonstrated they are at least as good as the Old Firm – and not just to themselves. If Hearts can do it, why not other teams?

The most exciting title race for years could be just the start of something truly special for all Scottish football fans.
