Why Gary Lineker versus the BBC is going to be a titanic World Cup clash

Will underdog Gary Lineker triumph over mighty BBC in big World Cup clash?

What will be the biggest match at the World Cup? Scotland vs Brazil? Argentina against England? The inevitable shock result as tiny Curacao beat a more fancied side (please let it not be Scotland, it’s surely another country’s turn to play that role).

All of those games would be contenders – with any meeting between the Tartan Army and Brazil’s famously exuberant fans always a joy to behold – if they do indeed take place. We await the draw with interest.

However, there’s a particular off-the-field drama that could be every bit as fierce as the games. For Gary Lineker – former presenter of the BBC’s Match of the Day – is to host a daily episode of The Rest is Football podcast on Netflix during the tournament, along with Alan Shearer and Micah Richards.

Will the ‘star quality’ of Lineker – who had been due to host the BBC’s World Cup coverage until their high-profile falling out – attract a bigger audience than the equivalent BBC programme? Get ready to crack out a beer and take in the titanic clash that will be Lineker vs the BBC.
