Trains without toilets sound like Rowan Atkinson's vision of Hell

Lumo trains affected by an embarrassing lack of toilets have been stopping for longer at stations

In Rowan Atkinson’s famous sketch in which he plays the Devil welcoming the damned to Hell, he is asked a question by one new arrival. “No, I'm afraid we don't have any toilets,” he replies. “I don't know if you read your Bible, but I'm afraid it's ‘damnation without relief’. If you didn't go before you came, then I'm afraid you're not going to enjoy yourself very much, but then I believe that's the idea.”

The Horned One could perhaps get a job with train operator Lumo, which has been running some services on the West Coast main line without any functional toilets despite journeys lasting about five-and-a-half hours.

Lumo said it was working with the company that refurbishes its rolling stock to find a solution to the problem. Meanwhile, trains have been stopping longer at some stations to allow passengers to use the facilities, resulting in one service from London Euston to Motherwell yesterday arriving 58 minutes late.

However, we must say we feel for passengers experiencing a stomach upset that requires a lengthier stay than usual.

Godspeed to all concerned.
