The reason why Edinburgh is so expensive for tourists is simple
A city designed by ‘enlightened angels’ is always going to attract more than its fair share of visitors

According to no less an authority than Post Office Travel Money, Edinburgh was the third most expensive city for tourists out of 50 across Europe, based on the cost of accommodation, meals, public transport and attraction entrance fees. Of the cities surveyed, only Oslo and Copenhagen were pricier, with Scotland’s capital placed higher than the likes of Geneva, Barcelona and Venice.
There are different ways to react to this information. On the one hand, the cost of living in Edinburgh is also a considerable problem for many locals, which our politicians should try to address. And tourists might eventually get fed up paying so much to come here and try somewhere else instead.
However, in a time of rather too much doomsterism, it’s also worth looking at the positives. Edinburgh is expensive because lots of people want to visit. And why? Because it is simply one of the most beautiful and amazing places in the world, a city that once moved the art critic Jonathan Meades to suggest it must have been designed by “enlightened angels”.
Edinburgh, we love you!
