Scotland's magnificent seven films at Sundance tells us a lot about how far we've come

Sorry Scotland, we’re just going to have to face up to the fact that we’re cool now

Next year Scotland will be taking part in a major international competition in the USA. No, this time we don’t mean the World Cup – although it’s always nice to find ways to casually throw it into the conversation, don’t you find?

Instead, we’re talking about the prestigious Sundance Film Festival, where a record-breaking (and magnificent) seven Scottish films have been selected to appear.

Edinburgh-based Louis Paxton’s comedy The Incomer – about two siblings trying to keep the Scottish island where they live free of outsiders – sounds particularly topical and will be the opening-night film of the ‘Next’ category for innovative, low-budget, independent films. “I’m so proud to have made a Scottish comedy, steeped in our history and humour, crafted for a universal audience,” he said.

Scotland’s film and TV industry has been doing remarkably well in recent years and there is no reason why it should not. So Scottish cultural cringe begone.

We’re just going to have to face up to it. We’re cool now. And when the Tartan Army invades North America, we’re going to be the talk of whatever the US version of the steamie is.
