‘Forget about your age. Just go for it and enjoy yourself,’ says 76-year-old Fortnite star Cath Bowie

Fortnite is a globally popular ‘shoot ‘em up’ video game in which millions of players blast zombies and each other, while also sometimes working together. It’s fair to say that they tend to be younger rather than older.

However, a 76-year-old exponent from Moray, Cath Bowie, aka Grumpygran1948, has become so popular that she has now been made “the face of Ikea Brannboll”, a range of what the store calls ‘gaming room furniture’. Bowie livestreams her games online so that others can watch and has garnered nearly 20,000 followers. She described the moment she was introduced to the game as “love at first sight”, saying she was “absolutely fascinated with it”.

It may not be for everyone. However, the online world is a truly vast place where all manner of games are available, from things like Fortnite, World of Warcraft and Minecraft to Scrabble, Wordle and online chess. And Bowie’s advice to older people thinking about trying games could be equally applied to almost any new experiences: “Forget about your age. Just go for it and enjoy yourself.”
