One thing we forgot to mention about Scotland's wonderful new World Heritage Site...
On Saturday, The Scotsman waxed lyrical about the wonders of the Flow Country, following the granting of World Heritage Site status by Unesco. We wrote of its myriad of small pools that “glitter like jewels”, its marvellous wildlife, and its vast store of carbon.
We perhaps should not have forgotten to mention one aspect of this near-pristine wilderness – there are rather a lot of midges. Of course, these insects no doubt have their own special and important role in the ecosystem, which, as far as we can tell, is mainly being a right pain in the neck, sometimes literally.

Hide AdKing Charles – who visited the Forsinard Flows to unveil a plaque marking its new status, putting it on a par with places like the Serengeti, the Galapagos Islands, and the Great Barrier Reef – clearly knows all about the risks. However, while some donned special veils to avoid the midges’ attentions, the monarch was undeterred by the presence of the treacherous beasties and stuck it out in a kilt and tweeds.
So well done to him and the Flow Country is still wonderful, but insect repellent may be advisable.
