Iran War ceasefire: Donald Trump left looking like a fool as he declares 'Golden Age' for Middle East

The Iranian regime still exists and still wants to pursue its nuclear programme

A day after telling the people of Iran that their “whole civilisation will die tonight”, Donald Trump declared “a big day for World Peace!” and predicted “the Golden Age of the Middle East”.

However, his acceptance of Tehran’s ten-point plan as the basis for peace talks quickly ran into trouble. Reports from Iran, disputed by Washington, claimed its proposals included the withdrawal of US forces from the Middle East, compensation payments by the US to Iran, and an acceptance that it should be allowed to enrich uranium, regardless of fears it plans to build a nuclear bomb.

Despite killing Iran’s ageing ‘Supreme Leader’, Ali Khamenei, and other senior figures, the regime itself still exists. It’s also now fighting for its life and is therefore likely to respond to any anti-regime protests inside Iran with even greater violence and brutality than before.

Apart from the deaths of several thousand people, including scores of schoolchildren, and skyrocketing global oil prices, it’s hard to see what Trump’s actions have achieved. Keir Starmer’s decision not to get involved looks wise, and the US President’s horrendous and bizarre remarks make him look a fool.
