How the Scottish Greens showed they are capable of coming up with a good idea

Libraries are hugely important and the Scottish Greens are right to campaign for every community to have access to one

It is said that ‘you are what you read’, an aphorism that should alarm those who’ve stopped reading entirely and instead rely on the briefest of TikTok videos as their main sources of information. In a complicated world, full of nuance and shades of grey, sometimes brevity is the soul of stupidity.

So the Scottish Green party’s pledge that every community would have access to a public library, a school library or a mobile library service if they win power is one we would wholeheartedly endorse.

This may come as a surprise to regular readers who are familiar with our overall assessment of the Greens, which is decidedly negative. People who think prisons should be ‘abolished’, like one Green candidate, ought to be nowhere near the corridors of power.

However, while we believe too many Greens are misguided dreamers who lack sufficient grounding in the realities of life, that does not mean we think they are bad people who are wrong about everything. Like most parties, they are capable of having at least one good idea and, in these fractious times, that’s a nuance of politics we should not forget.
