Finally the UK has a reason to thank Vladimir Putin

A live-fire exercise by a Russian warship off the coast of Plymouth is a helpful reminder of the need for the UK to dramatically increase defence spending

According to Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, the decision by a Russian frigate to carry out a live-fire exercise about 45 miles south of Plymouth on Monday was nothing to do with the arrival of Andy Burnham in 10 Downing Street on the same day.

“There is no need to see any hints here,” he said. “But, in turn, of course... probably one of his [Burnham’s] first actions was the remark of unconditional support for Ukraine, therefore, about Britain's intention to keep doing everything for the war to continue.”

Of course, the real reason why the war continues is that Putin is continuing it. Only the most gullible will believe the blood-soaked Kremlin’s attempt to paint the UK as the real warmonger. However, we should actually be grateful to the thuggish gangster currently masquerading as the Russian president for his childish and petty show of force.

It is a clear warning of hostile intent the UK must heed and, with John Healey – who resigned as Defence Secretary over insufficient military funding under Keir Starmer – now appointed Chancellor by Burnham, we trust and expect that it will be.
