Don't forget Billy Connolly's suggested national anthem when considering Flower of Scotland replacement
Is Scotland’s national anthem ‘maximum Scottish cringe’ and should we change it?
It may not be ‘official’ but somehow Flower of Scotland has become this country’s de facto national anthem. Not everyone is a fan.
While stressing it was a “lovely tune”, Scottish Conservative leader Russell Findlay has now said that “some of the lyrics are maximum Scottish cringe”. He suggested it was time to come up with “something a bit better”, with Loch Lomond as a possible alternative.
Tory MSP Murdo Fraser also argued Flower of Scotland “can be considered jingoistic with its tone and lyrics”. A national anthem? Jingoistic? Perish the thought! That said, it feels like a question that we should be asking.

There is a rather famous suggestion from the living legend that is Sir Billy Connolly. Admittedly it was offered as a potential replacement for the UK anthem (in a very funny stand-up routine), but there’s no denying the theme tune from The Archers would be a jolly departure from jingoism.
And while mining the soap opera world for anthem candidates, Take The High Road’s theme is surely worthy of at least a mention. We await the advice of The Scotsman’s letter pages on this matter.
