Glasgow Airport: Lufthansa suspends flights from Glasgow Airport due to fuel crisis

German airline Lufthansa has suspended some of its flights from Glasgow Airport citing high kerosene prices.

The airline, which operates flights to Frankfurt from Glasgow Airport, said it is discontinuing its CityLine flights with immediate effect and reduce ‘unprofitable’ flights due to the high price of kerosene.

It estimates that less than one per cent of available seat-kilometers will be affected.

20,000 short-haul flights will be cancelled by the end of October according to the airline. Affected flights are generally to and from its hub airports in Frankfurt and Munich. The airline hopes to save approximately 40,000 tonnes of jet fuel with the move.

A spokesperson said: "Following the decision to discontinue Lufthansa CityLine flights effective immediately and to reduce unprofitable flights in the future due to high kerosene prices, the Lufthansa Group’s summer schedule will be reduced by just under one percent of available seat-kilometers.

“To compensate for this, Lufthansa has taken immediate action and will consolidate the flight schedules of all Lufthansa Group airlines, canceling 20,000 flights by the end of October.

“As a result of these decisions, flights to Glasgow will no longer be operated by Lufthansa via Frankfurt, but for the time being, by Edelweiss via Zurich offering access to the Swiss International Air Lines network.

“This means that passengers will continue to have a wide range of options for accessing the Lufthansa Group’s global network.”

There have been warnings for weeks from the industry over supply of jet fuel. Last week, Fatih Birol, the head of the International Energy Agency, told AP that Europe has “maybe six weeks or so” of jet fuel left. He added that it was the “largest energy crisis we have ever faced.”

Oil prices have spiked as the US-Iran war continues into its ninth week. Earlier, brent crude oil price jumped to nearly $117 after reports of 'extended' Iran blockade.
