Kate and William go curling in Stirling, weave some tartan and join locals at their pub

The Princess of Wales also took to the loom to weave part of the world’s longest tartan scarf.

The Prince and Princess of Wales went curling in Stirling before heading to the pub during a day of meeting and greeting and well wishes around the city.

The Royal mini-tour started at the Radical Weavers studio before the couple headed to the National Curling Academy in Stirling, where they both slid a couple of stones down the ice.

Afterwards, they headed to The Gothenburg, known locally as The Goth, a community-run pub in the former mining village of Fallin, near Stirling. There, the Prince was presented with a special Guinness glass and shares in the pub.

The Royal couple met a large number of supporters on their tour, which took place on the second day of Prince Harry’s court battle against Associated Newspapers over alleged misconduct, which is taking place at the Royal Courts of Justice in London.

At the National Curling Academy, Kate and William met Team GB and Paralympic GB curling teams ahead of the Winter Paralympic Games in Milano-Cortina in February and March.

The royals took to the ice with some Team GB players to test their skills.

Kate and William then spoke to locals at the sports centre and told children about their curling experience.

Bruce Mouat, skip of the men’s curling team and one half of the mixed doubles, said: “It was wonderful, really nice that they came to wish us good luck for the next month we are about to embark on, both of them were lovely and willing to curl.”

He continued: “They said they would be watching the games, which means a lot to us.”

Earlier, Kate wove the first part of a record-breaking tartan scarf as part of a visit to the Radical Weavers hand-weaving studio.

During the visit, the pair were invited to choose colours for their own tartan, with William opting for a number of “bright” colours before being persuaded by Kate to add some gentler tones.

Afterwards the pair met members of the charity’s tartan-weaving course, where Kate took a seat at a traditional loom to add an “inch and a half” to what the Radical Weavers hope will grow into a record-breaking 3km-long tartan scarf.

The garment, which is being woven in the Wallace tartan and which will be produced communally, is intended to raise money to build Scotland’s Tartan Centre in Stirling.

The royal couple were shown round the charity’s Murray Place premises by the its founding director Mairi Breslin, who said the visit was “by far” the biggest event in the organisation’s seven-year history.

“(It’s a) complete game changer. It’s a small independent charity, with five members of staff,” she said.

The couple met The Goth’s publican, Rob Donaldson, who took over the establishment in 2013, and William spoke to him about the value of community.

As William left, Mr Donaldson handed him a Guinness glass with the Goth logo on it and shares in the pub.

He said: “It’s just made my day. It’s made my year.”

He said his high moment running the pub had previously just been “keeping it alive for the community”. But today, he said: “That’s just topped it, by the way, meeting a future king. Absolutely fantastic.”
