Iconic Edinburgh nightclub demolished to make way for student flats

One of Edinburgh’s most well-known nightclubs has been demolished, three years after closing its doors for the final time.

Atik on West Tollcross was beloved by generations of residents, with the popular venue having had several names over the years including The Cavendish (Cav), Clouds, Outer Limits, Bermuda Triangle and Lava & Ignite.

The venue originally opened as The New Cavendish dance hall in the 1940s, and over the years, it played host to a number of legendary acts – including Pink Floyd, The Jam and The Ramones.

In 2016, scenes from Danny Boyle’s T2: Trainspotting were filmed inside the venue with Edinburgh locals invited to star as extras wearing their finest 80s clobber.

But the iconic club closed in January 2023 after owners REKOM UK were unable to agree a new lease with the landlord. The site is due to be transformed into 145 student flats after plans were approved in 2024.
