Grand Scottish castle for sale in 'extremely rare' £15m opportunity

Chance to buy sprawling castle once owned by retail magnate
An imposing 19th century castle set in the Angus countryside and a grand Victorian mansion which once served as the home of Field Marshal Haig are among a cluster of heritage properties that have gone on the market for an eight figure asking price.
Kinnettles Castle, which sits in a sprawling 58 acre estate near Forfar, and Kinettles Mansion, located on the outskirts of St Andrews, form part of what has been described as an “extremely rare” opportunity to acquire prime properties across Scotland’s east coast.
Together with a hotel, bar and restaurant in the heart of St Andrews, the portfolio of properties are being sold together with an asking price of £15 million, although offers will also be considered on an individual basis.

The castle was formerly owned by Mike Clare, the founder of the bed retailer, Dreams. It is now run as a destination wedding and event venue, and features 11 bedrooms and suites, a selection of public rooms, a bar and lounge, and a grand entrance. A converted coach house adds a further eight bedrooms and benefits from private parking, a hot tub, and an outdoor BBQ area.
Its grounds comprise 44 acres of lawns and gardens, as well as 14 acres of woodland. A permanent marquee, connected to the castle and with capacity for 140 seated guests, is included, although its timber flooring requires renovation
The sandstone baronial-style mansion, meanwhile, was built in around 1870 for the Haig family. It features eight individually designed bedrooms, extensive public rooms, a bespoke cinema room, a wine cellar, and a large, well-equipped domestic kitchen. The property operates as an exclusive-use venue, set within a walled garden and accompanied by a gate lodge.
Lord Haig, who commanded British forces on the Western Front during World War I, was an avid golf enthusiast, and was the captain of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club in St Andrews. He later served as Lord Rector and Chancellor of its university.

Kinnettles Hotel, Bar & Restaurant is located on North Street in the heart of St Andrews, occupying a prominent corner position adjacent to the Greyfriars Inn and close to The Scores, Russacks Hotel, Seaton House and The Hamilton Grand.
The group of companies is being marketed by Christie & Co, who described it as a chance for someone to acquire a significant property interest in an area of Scotland that is highly sought after.
“This is an extremely rare opportunity to buy into prime St Andrews real estate and develop a hospitality portfolio in the globally renowned golfing mecca and top tier university town of St Andrews, as well as the castle estate in Forfar,” it said.
“Although the preference would be for a whole portfolio transaction, consideration will be given to proposals for individual properties. We encourage interested parties to get in touch."
The portfolio has been owned by private investors since 2016 who have operated them as a long-term investment, but Christie & Co said they now wished to sell up as the current tenancy comes to an end.
