Glen Coe: Stranded walker sheltered overnight on mountain during Storm Chandra

The walker became stranded while trying to descend Bidean Nam Bian.

A solo hillwalker spent the night sheltering behind a boulder after becoming stranded up a mountain in Glen Coe during Storm Chandra.

Glencoe Mountain Rescue said the hillwalker got into difficulty on Tuesday after the stormy weather prevented him from descending from the summit of Bidean Nam Bian.

The team was forced to abandon its rescue mission on Tuesday as Storm Chandra brought heavy rain and snowstorms - which heightened the risk of avalanche.

The rescuers said they made the “difficult decision” to withdraw for the night knowing that the weather was forecast to improve the following morning.

The team resumed early on Wednesday morning with the assistance of an Inverness Coastguard helicopter, and located the “very cold but resilient” casualty.

The walker was then stretchered off the mountain and flown down into the glen.

A spokesperson for Glencoe Mountain Rescue said: “GMR wish the casualty a full recovery and praise his resilience in the ferocious winds experienced during his 17hr ordeal.

Also, thanks to neighbouring team Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team and the invaluable assistance provided by R851 from Inverness.”

Storm Chandra sparked widespread travel disruption across the UK on Monday and Tuesday, with several yellow Met Office weather alerts issued across Scotland.
