Edinburgh Airport: Flights to major US city known as 'Birthplace of America' extended

Scotland's only direct route to US city Philadelphia will be extended into the winter season this year as American Airlines continues to grow its presence at Edinburgh Airport.

The extension comes after the service was resumed last summer. The successful return means that American Airlines will continue operating a daily flight to the Pennsylvania city, known as the ‘Birthplace of America’ from March 29 until early January 2027.

Further east coast destinations have also been announced, with American Airlines also resuming a daily New York JFK service from the Scottish capital, which will operate for the full summer season between March 8 and October 24.

The New York service will use an A321XLR aircraft with 155 seats – one of the newest aircraft in American Airlines’ fleet.

Gordon Dewar, chief executive of Edinburgh Airport, said: "Announcing an extension to an already popular route is a fantastic way to start the new year, and we're delighted to see American Airlines continue to grow its presence at Scotland's busiest airport.

"Transatlantic travel, both inbound and outbound, continues to be in high demand and we know there's an even greater interest in it this summer as the Tartan Army and others look to follow their teams at the 2026 World Cup. We're glad to continue to offer that breadth of choice by working with our partners to ensure we have fantastic connections for both business and leisure."

Speaking when the Philadelphia route was announced in October, José A. Freig, vice president of international and inflight dining operations at American Airlines, said: “When we returned to Edinburgh earlier this year, the excitement and positive feedback from our customers were overwhelming.

“Following its success, we’re looking forward to adding a new route between Edinburgh and the Big Apple, where our customers can experience the new A321XLR for the first time across the Atlantic.”

Philadelphia is located on the east coast of the United States and is a popular destination for travellers. Visitors can take in historic attractions such as the Liberty Bell and the Philly Museum of Art, famous for both its art and the ‘Rocky Steps’ which feature in the 1976 film Rocky.
