A witness said there was a “significant emergency services operation” outside Harvey Nichols department store, with emergency services in attendance.
Lothian Buses said services have been diverted away from the area.
A spokesman said: “Due to a road closure buses are unable to serve St Andrew Square and are instead bypassing and continuing on South St David Street until further notice.”
