A bus has been destroyed in a fire outside the Fife election count.

The drama happened next to the Michael Woods Sports Centre in Glenrothes. Emergency services are on the scene.

The double decker Stagecoach bus was stopped next to the adjacent Fife College’ Glenrothes campus and has been left little more than a tangled mess of metal.

Firefighters are continuing to pour water on to the flames, and a large ball of smoke can be seen from the door of the sports centre where votes are being counted for the five Fife constituencies in the Scottish Parliament elections. There are no reports of any injuries.

A Stagecoach South Scotland spokesperson said: “We can confirm one of our buses was involved in a thermal incident on Stenton Road in Glenrothes earlier today.

“The safety and wellbeing of our customers and colleagues is always our absolute priority and we're pleased to confirm that all customers and the driver were safely evacuated and are fully accounted for.

“We will carry out a full internal investigation into the cause of the incident, although it is too early at this stage to determine the circumstances involved.

“We want to reassure customers that all Stagecoach vehicles undergo regular and comprehensive maintenance and safety inspections across our depots.”
