The Hogmanay street party and concert has been a long time in preparation. And the city centre was largely closed to traffic today in the lead up to the big night.
Fencing, toilets, signage and security were all being put in place. Bands were warming up - and excitement was mounting among the revellers.
People began to gather as early as 6pm, but Princes Street was cleared ahead of the official 8pm start - and when the gates opened the crowds were ready for a great night.
Take a look at these pictures to get a flavour of Edinburgh getting in the mood.
