Edinburgh carjacking: New police statement after young woman robbed of car at knifepoint

Police manhunt continues after two thugs held a young woman at knifepoint before stealing her car

Police in Edinburgh are continuing to appeal for witnesses after a terrifying daylight knifepoint carjacking which left a young woman “deeply shaken”.

The 22-year-old woman was sitting in her white Peugeot behind the Scotmid store at Morvenside Close, Wester Hailes, at around 3.20pm on Tuesday when a man approached the car, threatened her with a knife and demanded she handed over her keys.

The woman got out of the car, assisted by a passerby, and the man got into the driver’s seat. Another man, who had been standing nearby, got into the passenger side and the pair drove off.

The car was recovered in Balfour Street in the Leith area around 12.30am on Thursday, and enquiries are ongoing to trace the two men.

The suspects are described as white and of gaunt appearance. One was aged 30-40 years with a scruffy blonde beard. He was wearing a black tracksuit and baseball cap. The second man was wearing a navy tracksuit and a black balaclava.

In a statement on Friday, Detective Inspector Robert Wallace said: “Thankfully no one was injured but we need to trace the men responsible for this attack which left the woman frightened and very upset.

“We are asking anyone who saw the car from when it was driven off from Morvenside Close until it was found in Leith to get in touch.

“Please also make contact if you recognise the men responsible or know where they might be.”

Anyone who can help is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 2051 of Tuesday, 12 May, 2026, or make a call anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
