Drivers and holidaymakers warned of 'heavy traffic' on key routes ahead of Royal Highland Show

A number of road closures near Ingliston have been announced as drivers are told to prepare for ‘heavier than normal’ traffic

This year’s Royal Highland Show - the biggest weekend of the year for Scotland’s rural sector - is almost upon us.

The four-day spectacle is taking place from Thursday to Sunday and will see thousands of people from across the industry descend on the Royal Highland Centre in Ingliston for a weekend of celebration and competition.

You can read our full explainer, including timings and how to get there, ahead of the weekend here.

The countdown to the fun is on, but as always, attendees, residents and anyone planning to travel to or from Edinburgh Airport this weekend should make sure to plan their journeys carefully to avoid significant disruption.

Traffic Scotland has warned motorists heavy traffic is expected on key routes into the Capital for the duration of the event.

In particular, congestion is expected over the Queensferry Crossing, as well as on the M90, A8, M8 and A720.

Surrounding local routes may also be impacted by extra traffic.

Officials at Edinburgh Airport said there may be some queueing traffic on routes around the airport during the four days, as well as in the days leading up to the event.

Ahead of last year’s show, they said the A8 Glasgow Road in particular is likely to see queues, so anyone arriving at the airport by car is encouraged to factor this in when planning their journey.

Event organisers have urged attendees to travel to the venue by public transport, including by bus and tram, where possible to avoid unnecessary traffic.
