Coastguard teams rescue sea kayakers swept towards rocky coast between Dunbar and St Abbs

Two sea kayakers were rescued by coastguard crews on Thursday after being swept towards a rocky area of the coast between Dunbar and St Abbs.

The Dunbar Coastguard, alongside teams from Eyemouth and Berwick, were mobilised at around 2.40pm following reports of two people in trouble in the Lumsdaine area near Fast Castle.

Both the lifeboat and on-land rope rescue crews were initially unable to reach the kayakers due to the difficult conditions, and the decision was made to deploy a rescue helicopter.

The kayakers were winched to safety and taken to a landing site where they were assessed for injuries.

A spokesperson said both casualties were very cold but neither were injured.

A spokesperson for the Eyemouth Coastguard said: “We would like to highlight that this was a professional group of kayakers, equipped appropriately for their activity.

“They were able to recognise they were in difficulty early and call for assistance promptly, which greatly contributed to a safe outcome.

“A great multi-agency effort with a positive result.”

A spokesperson for the Dunbar Coastguard warned people about the windy weather forecasted for the Easter weekend, and said anyone in trouble at sea or on the coast should call 999 and ask for the coastguard.
